Propecia (Finasteride) also marketed under the name Proscar

Propecia is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to reduce hair loss in men and also to treat an enlarged prostate. Manufactured and marketed by Merck, it is currently distributed worldwide.
In June 2011, the FDA issued a warning that Propecia is linked to an increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer. That warning was based on a study involving Avodart and Proscar. Propecia has 1/5 the active ingredient as Proscar, leading the FDA to determine that Propecia should carry the same warning about the risk of high grade prostate cancer.
Men who use Propecia may experience serious side effects including loss of libido, erectile dysfunction and development of breast tissue.

Billing Question
Submitted by a faithful "Our Town" reader

A doctor and a lawyer were talking at a party.

Their conversation was constantly interrupted by people describing their medical ailments and asking the doctor for free medical advice.
After an hour of this, the exasperated doctor asked the lawyer, "What do you do to stop people from asking you legal advice when you are out of the office?"
"I give it to them," replied the lawyer, "and then I send them a bill."
The doctor was shocked, but agreed to give it a try.
The next day. feeling slightly guilty, the doctor prepared the bills.
When he went to place them in his mailbox, he found a bill from the lawyer.

Take Care of your health

Fortunately for me I have been in health care for a long time, almost 37 years now. I know a lot, I stay informed and up to date.
I attend medical and legal conferences on a regular basis and I work clinically everyday. You can stay up to date and informed also, there is a wealth of information available to you on the Internet.

Take care of your health. Go to the doctor for regular checkups prepared with questions and speak up. If your doctor gives you a new prescription look it up and research it for side effects and precautions, know why you are taking it.

If he sends you for tests or lab work and you haven't heard about the results within a week, call him. You should have copies of your results sent to you. Don't assume that nonews is good news, he could be busy and hasn't reviewed it yet. If you need a follow up appointment in 3-6 months, call and make the appointment and keep it. If you'd prefer to see the doctor and not the nurse practitioner, tell them, that is your right.
If you are a 50 year old man askabout having your PSA drawn and a baseline colonscopy.
Women need to go for mammograms and pap smears yearly, women also need a colonoscopy by age 50.

If you have a family history of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney problems or other diseases ask your MD about this so that he can check you for these and you can take the precautions you need to.
Have your skin checked on a regular basis, skin cancer is on the rise. If you need to get something checked that has been bothering you don't put it off, it can only get worse with time.

When you have a family member in the hospital visit often, introduce yourself to the health care providers and ask questions. Be their patient advocate.
I love it when a patient asks a question because I think they are wise to do so and that they care about themselves. If you think you are not getting the proper care or treatment or you have doubts, get a second opinion that's your right.

Exercise, eat healthy and don't smoke (nothing good ever came from smoking).
Be proactive in your health care.

Sincerely, Susan
